Stay Smarter

A good way to notice and appreciate the old features is by sitting quietly and relaxing inside its beautiful central courtyard for some time. Many rooms open directly into this space. Having morning coffee or reading a book, surrounded by traditional architecture and sometimes lush plantings, offers such a calm yet real beginning or ending moment of the day, just away from all big street noises outside.

To maximize your sightseeing, hire a local guide and take the walking tour of the historic center. While independent exploration is also great, there's always some knowledgeable local guide who can bring to life the dramatic history of this city through hidden architectural details and stories about its colonial past. Not to mention making sure you don't miss any key landmarks! The hotel staff will most probably recommend some good guide or tour company.

For a different cultural experience, attempt to visit Morelia during one of its well-known festivals. The city has a famous International Film Festival (FICM) in October and celebrates the Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) at the beginning of November with amazing decorations and events, particularly in the nearby town of Pátzcuaro. This is an unmissable way to see Mexican culture in full swing, but be prepared to book your accommodation way in advance.

Finally, while Morelia has many excellent restaurants, be sure to sample the simple, local fare. Track down a vendor of gazpacho moreliano – not the cold soup, but a unique fruit salad from Morelia sprinkled with chili powder and cheese. Try also the traditional candies (ates) from the Mercado de Dulces. Tasting these flavors is a yummy and very economical way to discover what is real and good in Michoacán.
